THE RIHANNA BOB | My RiRi inspired blunt bob by Anna Giannini

I am a hair chameleon. In the last 5 years I’ve had shoulder length hair, asymmetrical hair, blonde hair, half shaved hair, wispy layered hair, hair half way down my back and now, the Rihanna bob – my personal favourite.

But then again, I guess all of my different hair styles have been my favourite at one point or another. (However I’ll never again do the half shaved look – what a pain to grow back, ugh.)

On my last visit to New York City I got it in my mind that I was sick to death of my current haircut and I just had to chop it off. It was a bit of a compulsive decision – like many decisions in my life – but I knew I had to do it.

Upon coming back to Toronto I started thinking about going just a little bit shorter, more blunt, above the shoulders and inspired by what is now commonly known as The Rihanna Bob. I had a similar haircut when I was eight but I think back then it was known as The Posh Spice Bob.

I teamed up with hair connoisseur Anna Giannini to get the perfect Rihanna bob at the salon where she works, Mosaic Hair Group in Forest Hill. Anna has been working (and teaching) with hair for over a decade and I can definitely vouch for the fact that she knows exactly what she’s doing. Hands down, the best haircut ever.

BEAUTY INFO | A Look at Various Laser and Non-Laser Procedures

Since skin is the largest organ in our body and does tremendous things to keep us healthy, it stands to reason that we should take care of our skin the most. A regular skin care regimen may not be enough, however. Not all skin issues are treatable at home. It helps to know some of the procedures your local clinic can provide when needed.

Chemical Peels

Your first thought when you hear of a chemical peel is probably pretty negative. It sounds like nasty chemicals are applied to the skin to make it raw. The truth is that different chemicals are used to treat different conditions, from skin regeneration or wrinkle reduction to a deep cleansing. Treatments can be mild to strong, depending on your skin care needs.

A Look at Various Laser and Non-Laser Procedures

Photo therapy

There are various treatments that use medical lasers like light therapy to treat skin issues. UVB treatments use lamps with artificial ultraviolet light on skin conditions such as psoriasis. LED Photomodulation is another therapy that uses light lamps to rejuvenate skin. Neither of these examples uses lasers.

Light-based Laser Therapy

A light-based laser device uses light energy to target the skin to achieve a specific result. For example, laser hair removal devices target the hair follicle to destroy the roots in order to discourage further hair growth. Infrared lasers target sun damaged skin to rejuvenate the skin cells and replace the damaged ones. Another light-based laser is an excimer laser that delivers high intensity UV light to treat psoriasis, functioning similar to the UVB treatment.

Heat Laser Treatments

Not all lasers use light energy for treatments. The YAG laser uses heat to target the skin in order to reduce spider veins and for hair removal. In addition, it can also be used for skin tightening by heating the cells to induce collagen production. This particular method purportedly targets specific cells without heating the skin surrounding the targeted area.

Radio Frequency Procedures

Another form of therapy uses sound waves to reduce wrinkles, clear up acne, and tighten skin. By using sound waves, it doesn’t cause harm to the eyes, so allows clinicians to apply to the area around the eyes safely. Light-based lasers cannot do that.

The Next Step

If any of these therapies sounds right to you, your next step needs to be consulting with your dermatologist. Explain to them your skin care concerns and discuss all your treatment options. They can make the best informed recommendation to you for your skin problems. After all, it’s your skin and you need to take care of it.

BEAUTY REVIEW | Eyebrow extensions at T.O.’s newest hot spot, The Beauty House

When it comes to brows, lashes and ‘sugaring’ (more about that later) The Beauty House in Toronto is the best of the best. Trust me, I’ve been there. Just in time for fashion week beauty prep, I was invited down the The Beauty House to experience first hand what they’re all about.

They’re known for their superior lash extensions but as luck would have it, I’d just gotten mine done a few days earlier – so instead I went for the eyebrow extensions. Yes, eyebrow. I’d never even heard of that but as you know, brows are the defining characteristic of your face, so you better have damn good ones (jokes).

I’m obsessed with brows. I haven’t always gotten them right – at least I admit that – but I figured if anyone could, it’d be the ladies at The Beauty House.

Fashion & beauty blogger Melina Morry of The Lady-like Leopard gets eyebrow extensions from The Beauty House in Toronto, Ontario. October 2015.

Check out those brows!

I was so happy with how they turned out. I wish I could have them all the time! It was so refreshing not to have to do a single thing to them during my regular make-up routine. No gel, no powder, no pencils – just perfect brows around the clock.

The ladies at The Beauty House were so welcoming and friendly (and all had perfect brows) too. I would definitely recommend anyone to head on over to The Beauty House for any of your beauty needs. (Book your appointment here.)

Oh, yes, and more about sugaring: it’s “a safe, gentle and more effective way to remove unwanted hair, with the added benefit of removing dead skin cells and conditioning the skin.” Who the hell needs waxing when you have body sugaring?!

Thank you ladies! Hope to be back soon.

TANGLE TEEZER | If you’ve got unruly hair, I’ve got the solution

As a kid, my mom used to brush my hair with what she called a “tangle comb” – it was awful. I dreaded coming out of the shower to my mother holding my towel and the “tangle comb”. I swear that comb made my hair more tangly than it already was (and in my opinion it wasn’t that bad). Needless to say, since childhood I’ve been skeptical of anything with the word “tangle” in the title.

But for some reason when I heard about the Tangle Teezer brush, I couldn’t wait to try it out. It was amazing! It didn’t hurt your hair at all and actually felt like a bit of a massage. Plus, they come in really cool colours and prints.

One really cool feature about it is the protective cover that clips on and off, so even if you just chuck it into your bag and run around town all day with a million other things in there, the bristles will stay in perfect shape.

Thank you Charming Media for sending one my way! I’m definitely throwing this stylish little gem into my mini leather backpack for those last minute touch ups on the go. Get one for yourself here at Sephora!

BEAUTY REVIEW | MoodMatcher: The best unexpected lipstick you’ll ever use

Fran Wilson MoodMatcher is the best lipstick you’ll ever use. Here’s why.

About 10 years ago my Grammy bought Fran Wilson’s MoodMatcher lipstick – one for me, one for her and a couple extras to pass around. We thought it was just the wildest thing (I was 13 at the time and being allowed to wear any sort of lipstick was the wildest thing). The stick is green but when it hits your lips it changes to a purple/burgundy-ish colour.

We put it on yesterday morning (after finding them at Pharmasave in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia for $3.99) after breakfast and it lasted through lunch all the way to dinner without having to re-apply. It goes on super lightweight and feels more like a balm than a lipstick.

There are tons of other products and colours that I’m just dying to try. Until I get my hands on some more products for review, you can shop online here.

3 reasons why you should love MoodMatcher lipsticks:

– they last for hours on end (sometimes until the morning)
– they go on lightweight & moisturize your lips
– they match to your PH balance so each shade is unique
