Are you ready to curb your social media addiction? Like, really ready? If the recent amount of Instagram blackouts we’ve been forced to experience lately are a sign, then you better start becoming less obsessed now. Going cold turkey isn’t for everyone. Even I felt myself reaching for my phone a million times when I knew that the app was down. It’s become a reflex. And it has to stop.
I don’t want to be (and refuse to be) a slave to my phone. So, that’s why I’m trying to kick my addiction to the curb. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Especially being a part-time blogger where I rely on my social media as part of my business. But at the same time, I’d rather put more effort into my actual blog than my social media. So, here we go.
Here’s how to curb your social media addiction in 5 ways.

Turn off notifications
If your phone isn’t constantly blowing up with notifications, it’s kind of out of sight, out of mind. Of course, you’ll still be tempted to check your social media apps, but at least it won’t be popping up every five minutes. I have all social media notifications turned off. It’s a dream.
Choose a day to turn off your phone
For me, Sundays are my “step away from social media” day. Yes, I still go on and check things out, but I don’t feel like I need to post anything or overly engage. Sundays are my day for books, magazines, chick flicks, face masks and possibly a glass or two of vino.
Delete apps
Think about which social media platforms are your absolute favourite. Then, delete the other ones you don’t love as much. For me, my favourites are Instagram, Twitter and Facebook; take or leave the rest. I remember that the day Instagram got stories I deleted my Snapchat account. It was a massive relief.
Film now, post later
One thing I always do is film and take photos in the moment, but wait to post until I get home. That way I can snap quickly and enjoy the moment while I’m out. Then, once I’m back home, relaxing and on WiFi, I make all my stories look fabulous and post. Who cares if people don’t see where you are right away?
Read a book instead
You know me—serving looks and reading books! When you’re lost in fabulous fiction, you’ll barely have time to even look at your phone. Plus, if you’re always checking your screen, you’re not absorbing the full story. So, put your phone down and pick up a paperback.
