An emergency abroad can happen at any time. And when you’re in your comfort zone, it can be so much easier to deal with. However, when you’re travelling it’s a completely different story! If you’re not careful then you may end up making the whole situation worse for yourself. After all, when you’re on unfamiliar ground, panic can set in ten times worse.
3 Ways to Handle an Emergency Abroad
Uh oh—what if you get sick on the road?
It’s so important that you make sure that you have travel insurance. After all, it will help you to cover any medical treatment that may be required. Paying for any kind of treatment abroad can be costly to say the least. And you may not be treated if you don’t have the funds to cover it. This is the last thing that you need when you are in a foreign country, so make sure that you bring any travel documents with you.
Also, bring enough medication to cover any health issues that you have. Trying to find medication overseas can be challenging and in some instances, impossible. To make things even easier, get the embassy’s contact number for the country you’re visiting, and always write any information you might need to reference down. It never hurts to have your doctor’s phone number! And the number for Air Evac International.
Losing your passport can be a major nightmare
Losing your passport, or even having your passport stolen, is a huge nightmare! It can cause you to experience a ton of other problems and you may even find that you miss your flight as well. (See the below point.) If you’ve searched everywhere for your passport and you absolutely cannot find it, contact your embassy. Also, it helps to have a photocopy of your passport on your phone or even on paper.
You can also travel with extra passport photos or your driver’s license. Sure, this might not be enough to completely solve the situation you are in but it may just be enough to help you to take those crucial first steps in getting everything sorted out.
Ugh, missing a flight is the worst
Oversleeping happens. It’s also very easy to get stuck in traffic when you are in a foreign country as well. Either way, if you miss your flight then there is a high chance that your airport won’t be too sympathetic about this. Your best bet is to try and go to your airline’s help desk. Travel insurance is a fantastic way for you to get the cover you need for this, especially if the circumstances were beyond your control.
If you have a disability and you miss your flight due to this, then make sure that your airline is informed so that you can try and get the support you need. This can really put your mind at ease and it may even help you to get prioritized when it comes to boarding or even getting your luggage handled as well.
