Are Leopard, Tiger & Zebra Prints the New Neutrals? Yes, Yes They Are

Roberto Cavalli — Animal Print Neutrals | The Lady-like Leopard

There is a quote that I’ve read time and time again that has never felt more relevant than right now:

“As far as I’m concerned, leopard is a neutral.”—Jenna Lyons

Of course, there are more animal print neutrals than just leopard. Even though cheeky cheetah patterns have been at the forefront of dressing for decades, designers have fallen in love with many other animals recently. We saw zebra at Roberto Cavalli, snakeskin at Ferragamo and tiger coats at Prada and Bottega Veneta.

Contrary to popular belief, animal prints aren’t always there to make a bold statement. That’s the beauty of animal print neutrals! So, are you ready to take a walk on the wild side—er, the wild jungle? Dress your way to fierceness with these four fabulous pair-with-anything prints.

Animal Print Neutrals are Here to Stay & Here’s Why

Leopard

Take it from Kate Moss, leopard print is the most neutral print of all. She’s been wearing the same look for 15 years—black denim, basic tee and a leopard coat. And guess what? It still works. Leopard prints aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they’re having a major moment right now. (Just make sure you keep them classy.)

Zebra

This is one print that I think looks really fabulous not only in its original black & white, but in colour too. It’s also not the most outrageous print so it can be a little easier to wear. A zebra coat will literally layer over anything! If you’re intimidated by animal prints, just think of this one like a classic stripe.

Tiger

If you thought that the only wild cat with nine lives was a leopard, you thought wrong. Tiger is back and it’s bigger & better than ever. This look from Balenciaga is a really fantastic example of how to pair tiger with other prints too. If you’re feeling really bold, that is.

Snakeskin

We’ve seen snakeskin around for years, but somehow it still feels fresh. Perhaps because of its sophisticated allure? Who knows. What I do know is that with a dress like this Salvatore Ferragamo one, snakeskin ups its ante. With a pair of black pumps and a cool overcoat, you’ll be good to step into the office—or coffee shop, boutique, restaurant—in style.
