Few things in your closet are more versatile than stark white shirts. If you’re under the impression that they’re ultra boring, you need to think again. Not only are they incredibly flattering on all body types, they’re a timeless investment that will never go out of style. And I truly do mean never.
My white shirt icon is none other than Cindy Crawford. Did you catch her in Vogue’s 73 Questions?! She’s rocking that white button-down like nobody’s business. No matter what age, what size or whatever you are, a white shirt is always going to look amazing.
Although, if you’re constantly wearing it the same way it can start to look a little stiff. (We only want the cuffs and collars to be that stiff—and, of course, a dirty martini.) Here are five ways to switch up your stark white shirts.
5 Ways to Wear Stark White Shirts
1. The “right” way
By the “right” way I mean how you’d traditionally see a button-down blouse being worn. You know, kind of just buttoned up and either fully tucked in or left hanging. Sure, this can get a little dull, but it truly works wonders in professional situations. Loosen up the buttons when you head out for celebratory cocktails after work.
2. One side tucked in
This is the ultimate “cool girl” way to wear stark white shirts. It’s like the oh-my-god-I-totally-just-rushed-out-the-door-this-morning look, even though you know damn well she spent more time on perfecting the slouchy tuck than she did on her brows. Which may or may not have been a questionable decision.
3. Tied at the waist
Knotting your shirt at the waist is the perfect way to show off that funky belt you wear with your high-waist denim. Or for layering the shirt over a dress. The other day I wore my birthday dress to work and layered a button-down over top, knotted it at the waist and instantly turned a party frock into fashion-forward office attire.
4. Diagonally tucked
Forget about the buttons completely and just tuck it in. Seriously. It looks really cute if you tuck each side into the opposite side of your jeans or mini skirt or whatever. Disclosure: You might need some double sided tape for this look. Even while photographing these pics on my balcony in NYC I had a bit of a nip slip.
5. Off-the-shoulder
If you go for an oversized shirt—like I did with this Calvin Klein men’s edition—you have a lot more room to work with. You can get a little more creative! Pull it down around your shoulders, do up a couple buttons and then either tuck it in or tie it to keep it in place all day long.
Ultimately, having a few stark white shirts in your wardrobe makes you a style maven without even having to try. So, what are you waiting for? Get shopping!
